The borgo of Robecco sul Naviglio (province of Milan) stands in an area with a wealth of history featuring: Roman settlements and development in the Lombard and Carolingian eras; in the Middle Ages, the borgo became property of the Abbey of Morimondo and the Basilica of Sant’Ambrogio; later it passed to the Visconti and Sforza families. During the Renaissance and afterwards, Robecco and its Naviglio (canal) was a popular destination for some of the most prominent families of Milan, including the Borromeo-Visconti, Archinto, Litta, Clerici, Verri and Castelbarcos.
Overlooking the Naviglio Grande several km from the Ticino river, the borgo has classic alleyways in the historical centre and prestigious ancient buildings. These include Villa Borromeo Visconti Biglia Confalonieri Gandini, known as Villa Gaia, Palazzo Archinto and the Villa Gromo di Ternengo with its park.
