The 11-hectare wide Torre del Fiscale Park is part of the greater Appia Antica Regional Park in the Appio-Tuscolano neighbourhood in the south eastern Rome. The name derives from a medieval tower – del Fiscale – built in the 13th century by Pope Sixtus V on the route of the Aqua Claudia and Acqua Felice aqueducts. The 30m high tower was one of many in an articulated look-out system that monitored the entire ager Romanus and acted as a defence structure for the properties of noble Roman families.
There are many references to other historical eras in the park such as the Temple of God Redicolo, the Nymphaeum of Egeria, the Church of Sant’Urbano, medieval towers, the complex of Tombe Latine and the Parco degli Acquedotti, with the imposing ruins of the conduits that brought water to Rome. There is also the Casale Museo, a Roman-era hypogeum which periodically hosts exhibitions.
