The Parco naturale regionale dei monti Simbruini (Regional Nature Park of Monti Simbruini) is the largest protected nature reserve in Lazio, occupying approximately 30,000 hectares on the border of the provinces of Rome and Frosinone. There are two water courses in the park, the Simbrivio stream and the river Aniene, which feeds the picturesque Trevi waterfalls at Comunacque. Rising behind Cervara and Subiaco, the Simbruini range has peaks over 2,000m: the Viglio, Cotento and Tarino. The mountain range is interrupted by plains and hills covered with beech forests where it is not unusual to find Karst canyons and sinkholes, such as the grotta dell’Inferniglio at Jenne and the pozzo del Gelo at Camerata Nuova, which demonstrate the water’s work over centuries.
Other historical attractions are the Santuary of the Holy Trinity in Vallepietra and the ruins of the villa built by the Emperor Nero on the shores of the Aniene near Subiaco. The Anio Novus, Aqua Marcia and Aqua Claudia aqueducts were built on the river to bring water to the capital. Another famous borgo inside the nature reserve is Cervara di Roma, a bona-fide open air museum with numerous sculptures cut into the rock and poetry inscribed in the alley and on the stair.
