Mazzarino (CL) was established during the Middle Ages on a hill above the river Salso near the ruins of a castle of Arab origin, known as u cannuni, where only a single cylindrical tower remains. The long main thoroughfare of the historical centre is dotted with squares and open areas. Numerous buildings date to the 1700s and 1800s including Palazzo Branciforte and the churches that make this a key centre of Sicilian Baroque. These include Santa Maria della Neve, whose main altar painting features golden and coloured crystals and Murano glass and is considered a prime example of Sicilian Baroque art. The central square features the former Convent of the Carmelite Fathers, now the town hall, and the Church of Santa Maria del Monte Carmelo.
The castle has featured as a location in the TV series La piovra.
