Val Demone, in the centre of Sicily, is a land of ancient feudal territories, such as that of Leonforte (EN), founded by Prince Nicolò Placido Branciforti, which has maintained a certain medieval shape. Streets and squares, trodden on by Garibaldi’s soldiers, bear witness to its ancient history. Numerous imposing buildings date to the Baroque period when the village enjoyed its moment of maximum splendour, including the Chiesa Madre dedicated to St. John the Baptist which conserves a gold statue of the Virgin Mary with St. Simon at her feet; the 17th century Palazzo Branciforti which features imposing stables, a sign of the prince’s grand passion for horse breeding; the fountain of the Nymphs built by the prince in the garden of the nymphs; and the Gran Fonte with 24 spouts and a façade of arches.
