South of the straits of Messina, Taormina stands on a natural terrace between sea and mountain, 206m above sea level. It was founded in the 4th century BCE and prospered greatly during the Norman era. In the 1700s, it became an essential stop on the Grand Tour for well to do travellers from Northern Europe.
Porta Messina leads to the heart of Taormina, the medieval quarter where the following can be found: Palazzo Corvaia and the Church of St. Pancras built in the 1600s; the cavea of the ancient Odeon; the Church of St. Catherine of Alexandria nearby; piazza IX Aprile with its panoramic terrace; and the Clock tower. The defensive palace of the dukes of Santo Stefano with Gothic, Arabic and Norman elements and the Badia Vecchia date to the Norman occupation.
The symbol of the city, the Teatro Antico of Taormina was built in the Hellenistic era and it was transformed into an arena during the reign of Emperor Augustus. Today it allows access for 4,500 spectators and is used for shows.
