The Tonnara dell’Orsa is a defence tower built on the coastline between Carini and Cinisi (province of Palermo) in the 14th century. The building was intended for use in hunting tuna fish, an activity which continued into the 16thcentury. Now restructured, it is used for cultural activities and ceremonies and houses restaurants and a museum of the sea.
The two-storey tower is located on the corner closest to the sea. To the left, the rivellino, a small tower with a walkway, controlled the hinterland. Adjacent to the watchtower are a cistern, well, washing basin and oven. The ogival entrance arch leads to the baglio, a building on a square layout with an inner courtyard surrounded by thick walls which holds various rooms, areas for cleaning the tuna and for use as a boat house.
