The 18th century Baglio di Scopello is certainly one of the best conserved and most beautiful in the area of Castellammare del Golfo (TP), along with the tonnara and its two towers. With an inner courtyard surrounded by fortifications, bagli were true feudal settlements built between the 1500 and 1700s during the time of colonisation by the Barons. Landowners and the peasants who worked their estates lived within these fortress walls. Scopello, whose name derives from the Greek scopelos “faraglioni” (rock stacks), was ecclesiastical property until 1300s with the Church benefitting from its agricultural and pastoral industry. It became a feud of the Fardella family in the 14th and 15th centuries. The farmhouse included a group of residences and warehouses, a palmento for wine and an oil press, a pool with drinking trough. During the 1800s the various residential units passed to different owners, and were modified or restructured.
