The four episodes in season 3 of Màkari present new murder cases for the amateur detective Saverio Lamanna created by novelist Gaetano Savatteri and played by Claudio Gioè.
The Sicily that emerges from Màkari directed by Monica Vullo and Riccardo Mosca is a land of strength and energy, blue as the sea that laps its shore, as bright as the sky that surrounds it, and as green and ochre as the stones, tuff rock and limestone that cover it.
The series is set in Trapani and the surrounding province, in particular the small fishing village of Macari – hamlet of San Vito Lo Capo – which gives its name to the series and the gulf it overlooks. Here Saverio lives with Suleima (Ester Pantano) in his family’s holiday home with a splendid view of the sea. Another wonderful view is offered by Marilù’s restaurant (Antonella Attili) which overlooks the tonnara and faraglioni of Scopello, a coastal hamlet of Castellammare del Golfo. Locations also included Erice and Palermo, in particular the seaside neighbourhood of Mondello.
Episode 1, Il fatto viene dopo, focuses on the terrible feud between two of Savario’s ex-girlfriends. A dead body turns up: the corpse found in cala del Bue Marino, on the eastern tip of the island of Favignana (Egadi archipelago), where the unusual appearance of the steep cliff over the deep blue seafloor with pale blue patches is due to the presence of ancient tuff-rock quarries. The ending is set in the cloister of the ancient Carmelite Convent in Trapani, dating to the 1300s and home to the Museo Regionale Conte Agostino Pepoli.
The murder in episode 2, La città perfetta, has roots in the tragic history of Gibellina, erased completely by the earthquake of 1968. In memory of the victims of the tragedy, the remains of the ruined village were transformed into works of art by Alberto Burri, who covered them with a flow of white cement leaving the original urban outline visible. During the years of reconstruction, new Gibellina, some 20 km further down the valley, attracted the attention of internationally famous artists like Arnaldo Pomodoro and Pietro Consagra who made it into an open-air contemporary art site.
The murder of a former boyfriend of Marilù’s during a literary festival is the focus of episode 3, Tutti i libri del mondo. The festival settings include the tonnara of Favignana. The episode also features Villa Comunale Regina Margherita, the main city park in Castellammare del Golfo.
An “accident” in an elegant spa resort leads Saverio to investigate in episode 4, La segreta alchimia: the location is Hotel Baglio Basile in Petrosino (Trapani), a noble residence built in 1862.
