Exactly a year after broadcast of the first four episodes, Macari, the little village in the centre of a gulf on the north-western coast of Sicily that gives the series its title, is once again the setting for Saverio Lamanna’s dream of becoming a novelist which is beginning to falter: his editor is upset by the lack of book sales and is ready to cut ties. Suleima is still away and the distance begins to weigh on their relationship, when she finally makes a permanent return to Sicily, to follow a new project “La città del sole”, she arrives with her charming boss, Teodoro Bettini (Andrea Bosca), which sparks Saverio’s jealousy.
Once again, the setting is the area around Trapani, with several places from season 1 reappearing and featuring Scopello, Trapani and the picturesque village of Erice. This year, however, the production also extended into the area around Agrigento, in particular the Valle dei Templi and Giardino della Kolymbethra, the latter a focus of investigation in episode 1 when an archaeologist is murdered.
The series also features Favara, the Scala dei Turchi, well-known as a favourite location for Inspector Montalbanoand the setting for the opening title sequence whose theme tune is sung by Il Volo and the beach of Mondello in Palermo.
