The marine area of the Plemmirio extends along the eastern coast of Syracuse with a 6km stretch of sea near the Maddalena peninsula, from punta della Mola to punta Milocca. It was established in 2005 to protect the significant varieties of flora and fauna there and the marvellous sea beds. The rocky coast opens up in natural and manmade caves. In several points, the curves of the cliff create geyser-like sprays in the waves. In addition to its stunning natural beauty, the seafloor preserves authentic archaeological treasure with the ruins of Greek and Roman ships and their cargoes: amphoras and anchors of all sizes, types and eras. An ancient lighthouse stands on the Murro peak of the peninsula.
