Managed by WWF, Torre Salsa Nature Reserve extends over a surface area of about 762 hectares between the territories of Siculiana Marina and Eraclea Minoa in the province of Agrigento. Its coastline stretches for about 6km, alternating cliffs of varying degrees of steepness, dunes and pristine beaches with a transparent sea. The vegetation is typical of dune areas: clumps of bush and Mediterranean dwarf palms known locally as giummare.
The Cannicella and Eremita rivers flow through natural terraces near the cliff. On the other side, mount Stella (one face rising sheer over the sea), mount Cupolone (with abandoned quarries of inert materials) and mount Eremita can be seen.
Torre Salsa stands in the wetland at the heart of the Reserve: an ancient watch tower dominating the tip of a little clay promontory. The Salso river flows between mount Eremita and the Salsa promontory in a wide shallow bowl called “Pantano”.
