Established in 1995, the Monte Conca Reserve occupies over 2 km2 in the territory of Campofranco (CL), a village founded in the 16th century in the centre of a mining area.
Caves and Karst phenomena, which have generated numerous waterfall pools, make the reserve very interesting to speleologists. The pressure of the water has eroded the rock (of soluble chalk) and carved out the area above and below ground.
The most imposing caves are the Inghiottitoio and the Risorgenza (or Carlazzo), the latter situated in a bay on the river Gallo d’Oro. Ruins of an ancient Roman bridge can be found on the banks of the river which extends 3km across the mountain area. Neolithic traces and medieval fortresses can also be found on mount Conca.
