Torre Colimena is a beach area in the municipality of Manduria (TA) and part of the Parco Naturale “Palude del Conte e Dune Costiere”. The soft sand and sloping sea floor transforms into jagged cliffs in the vicinity of the tower.
The tower is part of a defence system of coastal towers, built by Emperor Charles V of Spain after the Ottoman invasion of Otranto in 1480 to protect the Salento peninsula from further attacks.
The meaning of the name of this place is still uncertain, however its etymology demonstrates Hellenic roots which connoisseurs of local tradition believe reach back to the era of Magna Grecia and the subsequent Greek-speaking presence in Salento.
