Malcesine, on the slopes of mount Baldo (province of Verona), develops around Scaligero Castle on a small promontory on the Verona side of lake Garda. The territory belonging to the municipality extends across an area of 68 km2 with a large range in heights: from 65m at the level of Lake Garda to 2,000m at the peak of mount Baldo. The cable car from Malcesine to mount Baldo reaches as high as 1,760m above sea level with rotating cabins that offer a 360° panoramic view.
The medieval borgo, heart of the town, has a small harbour, little squares and a labyrinth of picturesque alleys, its buildings reflect in the water of the lake which is often the setting for prestigious sailing regattas. Points of interest include Scaligero Castle with its original pentagonal keep, and the Venetian Gothic Palazzo dei Capitani once the headquarters for the Captain of the Lake during the rule of the Venetian Republic. Recently restored, the Palace has several frescoes and a beautiful lakeside garden.
The hamlets of Cassone and Navene are also part of the municipality: the latter is a popular destination for sailing and windsurfing.
