The Hermitage of Sant'Arcangelo stands on a small clearing in front of the Church. It consists of three interconnected rooms hewn out of the rock as cells for the hermits and a chapel built on the edge of a sheer drop. All that remains of the chapel today are its side walls, while the cells conserve a network of little channels carved out of the rock by the hermits, unique evidence of a water gathering method and use. The writers Ughelli and Baroni believe that the hermitage hosted St. Francis of Assisi in 1216 and Pope St. Celestine V in 1295 before his escape to Vieste where he was arrested by the Angevin troops.
