The Hermitage of St. Michael Archangel is a small rock church on one of the peaks in the Aurunci range, Mount Altrino, in the territory of Maranola, hamlet of Formia (LT).
The rock hermitage stands on a steep spur and can be reached by the track that leaves Sella Sola and heads to the Redentore peak. The earliest documentation of its existence is in the Codex diplomaticus cajetanus (830 CE) a volume of papers compiled in the Abbey of Montecassino relating to the territory of the Duchy of Gaeta.
Its Neo-Gothic external façade, however, dates to 1893 and was designed after a pastoral visit by the Archbishop Francesco Niola who believed that it was a necessary modification to prevent further environmental damage to the building.
Twice a year, on the last Sunday in June and 29 September, a solemn procession takes the statue of St. Michael from Maranola up the mountain to the church.
