The Giardino della Minerva is a botanical garden located in the heart of the residential centre of Salerno. In 1300, teacher Matteo Silvatico set up the Garden of Simples, a precursor for the botanical gardens, where he cultivated plants with medicinal properties to use in teaching activities at the School of Medicine. An integral part of the Giardino della Minerva is Palazzo Capasso which belonged to the Silvatico family.
After WWII, the Garden was donated to the Municipality of Salerno. Today it hosts exhibitions and events throughout the year and displays several painted tiles recovered during the restoration work on Palazzo Capasso. The Museum of Pharmacy was opened in 2008.
