Salerno is located between the Amalfi Coast and the piana del Sele. It was conquered in the 8th century by the Lombards who made it the most flourishing centre of the Southern Italy, growth that continued under the Norman and Swabian dominations only to come to a stop in the 16th century with the arrival of the Spanish.
The medieval historical centre has churches, noble palaces and numerous convents. The main monument of the city is the 11th century Duomo of San Matteo, a masterpiece of Norman architecture, whose atrium is dominated by an imposing Romanesque bell tower. Numerous art deco buildings built in the early 1900s throng Lungomare Trieste, one of the longest seashores of Italy.
The Castle of Arechi stands on the hills above the city and offers a fantastic view.
