The Falchera neighbourhood is located in the extreme northern suburbs of Turin. Designed by architect Giovanni Astengo, it was developed after WWII (1952-54) to provide housing for workers and was known from the start as Falchera (after Flachera Vecchia).
The borgo was independent from the city with a layout of three-storey apartment buildings with red brick facades. The buildings, with three or four wings extending around wide areas of green space, were placed in a semi-circle around a centre whose heart is the present-day piazza Giovanni Astengo. On the eastern side of the square, the Parish of St. Pius X with oratorio was inaugurated in 1957.
