The Cavallerizza Reale was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1997. The complex of buildings is the result of the continuous extension of the Accademia Reale, known as the ‘command zone’ of the Savoy capital, from the late 1600s onwards. The area was earmarked for “equestrian exercises” (as the name suggests) in 1740 with the extension work entrusted to Benedetto Alfieri.
The external area has mostly retained its authentic state, despite being used as a residence in the 20th century. It was also used as a hall for theatre performances in the first decade of this century and in 2007 the entire complex was ceded by the Agenzia del Demanio (the Public Property Agency of Italy) to the Municipality of Turin. At the moment the entire area is uninhabited and unused, except for the wing restructured in 2014 and used by the University of Turin as its main hall.
