The San Vito Bridge which crosses the river Basento, near Potenza, is of great historical interest: the pylons – the only remaining part of the original structure – indicate that its construction probably dates to late Roman times while the upper part shows signs of various restoration interventions from the Middle Ages onwards.
The three-arched bridge has a rectangular shape and is supported by two central pylons planted in the river bed. Known in antiquity as the Sant’Aronzio Bridge, it was an important part of the ancient via Herculea, a road which crossed the region of Lucania, passing through the city Potenza. According to tradition, the bridge evokes the memory of St. Arontius who came from Africa with his brothers Onorato, Fortunaziano and Sabiniano, who were all to die as martyrs between 238 and 288 CE in the River Basento for refusing to renounce their Christian faith.
