A hamlet in Sorano (GR), Sovana is a Medieval and Renaissance borgo of Etruscan origin, known – as are Sorano and Pitigliano – as the “city of tuff”, because of the characteristic Vie Cave. The borgo contains ancient tombs, necropoles and medieval fortifications such as the ruins of the 11th century Rocca Aldobrandesca whose decline began in the 17th century circa.
On Piazza del Pretorio is the 12th century Palazzo dell’Archivio, identified by its large clock and small gabled bell tower. Close by, the Paleo-Christian Church of St. Mamiliano, one of the most ancient buildings in Sovana, houses the museum dedicated to the saint and the “Treasure of Sovana”, 498 gold coins from the 5th century, found in 2004 during restoration work on the building.
The Duomo of Sovana, the Co-cathedral of St. Peter and St. Paul, stands in the area which was probably once the Etruscan acropolis: the present building, which dates to 8th-10th century, is one of the most important Romanesque buildings in Tuscany.
