The municipal library of Cosenza is one of the largest in Southern Italy, housing and preserving numerous manuscripts, choirbooks and incunabula. The architectural complex of the library, on piazza XV Marzo in the centre, comprises two buildings: the Palazzetto della Cultura – built in the 1930s, in the midst of the Fascist regime to house the library, the Accademia Cosentina (built in 1500 by Aulo Giano Parrasio) and the Civic Museum – and the older wing which houses the department of ancient books.
The first floor of the palazzetto contains the periodical room with a collection of newspapers and magazines while the reading room is on the upper floor. A special pathway leads to the library storage in the Church of Santa Chiara, with a cloister from the mid 1500s. The storage houses rare books and a large newspaper library with about 250,000 newspaper and magazine publications.
