Cosenza, the main city in the northernmost province of Calabria, first began on colle Pancrazio, at 238 m above sea level, where the Norman Swabian Castle stands. The city is divided between the original settlement, now Cosenza Vecchia, and the modern city which extends across the left bank of the River Crati, which features the Calatrava bridge.
The old city features noble palaces, 19th century artisanal workshops, churches and squares. Corso Telesio, a main thoroughfare, is interrupted by the circular piazza del Duomo, articulated in staircases, which is the location for the 12th century Cathedral of Our Lady of the Assumption with Gothic Cistercian lines. The most ancient place of worship, however, is the 10th century Church of St. John the Baptist, while the 13th century monastic complex of St. Francis of Assisi comprises church, convent and cloister.
A statue of philosopher Bernardino Telesio stands in the centre of piazza XV Marzo, surrounded by the teatro comunale Alfonso Rendano, the palazzo del Governo and the historic park of Villa Vecchia.
Corso Mazzini, which features Art Deco style buildings, is the heart of the modern city and the shopping district. It is a large pedestrian area, which includes, among other things, the MAB-Museo Aperto Bilotti, which stretches from piazza Bilotti to piazza dei Bruzi.
