The complex of the ancient thermal baths of Porretta Terme (BO), also known as Terme Vecchie or Terme Alte, stands in the foothills of Monte della Croce on the river Rio Maggiore.
Its history dates back to Roman times and the thermal structures to the early 1800s. The architectural complex, presently in disuse, owes its development to the springs containing bromide and iodide salts that feed the thermal baths of Marte Reale, Donzelle and Leone-Bovi which are gathered around a small square with a little fountain. The walls of the Sala Bibita are still covered by 5,000 small ceramic tiles created in the early 1900s by Galileo Chini, a significant exponent of art deco in Italy.
