The Quadrilatero is an area in Bologna with ancient traditions of artisanship, merchantry and commerce, which reached the height of its development in the Middle Ages and has maintained its role unvaried through time.
Here the city’s principal professional corporations had their headquarters: the guilds of the Orefici (goldworkers), Beccai (butchers), Pescatori (fishermen), Salaroli (salt industry and derivatives), Pellicciai (skinners), Barbieri (barber-surgeons) and the Society of Painters. In the early 1900s, a large part of the commercial activities located in the (then) narrow street named Mercato di Mezzo (later via Rizzoli) in the Middle Ages moved to the heart of the Quadrilatero.
Today the denomination identifies a circumscribed area in the historical centre of Bologna, bounded by piazza Maggiore, via Rizzoli, piazza della Mercanzia, via Castiglione, via Farini, piazza Galvani and via dell’Archiginnasio.
