Biblioteca Liciniana is the municipal library of Termini Imerese (PA), established in the 1800s thanks to the efforts of a priest, Giuseppe Ciprì, and later named “Liciniana” after the founder’s nom de plume - Mopso Licinio. Since 1952, the library has been located in the former Monastery of Santa Chiara, which dates to the early 1600s and has a cloister with portico on three sides.
The library comprises 102,000 volumes and an archive of documents dating to the 16th century, in addition to material such as videotapes, CD-Roms, DVDs, drawings, engravings, historical photos, geographical and topographical maps and original blueprints.
Adjacent to the library, between via Garibaldi and via San Marco, are the remains of the Roman amphitheatre. Elliptical in shape and modest in size, it was discovered after excavation work, the arena is actually 3m below the level of the outer portico. The excavation in the early 1900s brought to light some ruins and two entrances now visible in the northern part of the area.
