The complex of Santa Sofia, located in the square of the same name in Benevento, comprises a church, the bell tower behind the square, the former monastery and its cloister, and a central fountain.
The Church di Santa Sofia was founded by Arechi II in 758 immediately following his election as Duke of Benevento. A rare example of Longobard architecture, it has a characteristic star-shaped layout and the unusual positioning of the pillars creates charming effects of light and shadow. A reconstruction dating to the mid 1100s, the cloister adjacent to the church presents Romanesque letters and Arabic influences. Today the Museo del Sannio (Museum of Samnite Civilization) is annexed to the church and cloister.
