Via Garibaldi in Genoa, built in 1550 as strada Maggiore, was later known as strada Nuova, and then as via Aurea until the 19th century. It took 50 years to complete and became an example of modern architecture in Europe for its stylistic unity, due in part to the work of Pieter Paul Rubens who curated the layout and perspective look of the buildings.
The road was dedicated to Giuseppe Garibaldi in 1882 and some of the city’s most important buildings can be found on its path, from piazza delle Fontane Marose to piazza della Meridiana, including Palazzo Podestà (1565). The palaces that make up the civic museum path, Musems of Strada Nuova: Palazzo Rosso, Palazzo Bianco and Palazzo Tursi are all on via Garibaldi.
The pedestrian street was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2006 as part of the Strada Nuova system along with the Palazzi dei Rolli.
