An ancient fig tree is located in the ruins of Monterano (province of Rome), built on a hill of tuff rock between the Tolfa and Sabatini mountains and today part of the Regional Nature Reserve of Monterano.
Like other ancient trees, the “arboreal patriarchs” of Lazio, the Monterano fig is a natural monument enclosing the secret of its longevity in its rings. The tree has grown up amidst the ruins of the Convent of St. Bonaventure, designed during the Renaissance by a young Gian Lorenzo Bernini, protected by its crumbling walls and its long branches create a dramatic effect as they extend towards the old structure, almost as if trying to touch it.
