The Sorbo valleys, located on the border between Campagnano and Formello, are inscribed as Sites of Community importance as per the European Commission Habitats Directive. The environment features tuff rock valleys typical of the Roman countryside with a river habitat that is fairly well conserved and a range of flora, including some extremely rare animal species.
The valleys offer a setting that includes wooded hills, canyons and wide plains. The river Crèmera, a tributary of the river Tiber, crosses the entire length of the area, its path digs through the tuff rock at some points, carving deep narrow gorges and creating ravines. Human activity has affected only part of the landscape, determining the formation of extended grazing pastures still used today to breed wild cows and horses.
The valleys also feature traces of human history like the majestic Sanctuary of Our Lady del Sorbo which rises up on a rocky spur from the ruins of an ancient castle.
