The Museum of Natural History of the Mediterranean dates to 1929 and is housed in Villa Henderson which was built at the end of the 18th century in the heart of Livorno. The villa is flanked by exhibition spaces created in the 1980s by architect Giuseppe Milanesi.
The complex today extends over 7,000 sqm with a range of exhibition halls including: sala del mare (sea), dedicated to the whales of the Mediterranean; la sala degli invertebrati (Invertebrates) on via dell'Ambrogiana; and the sala delle esposizioni temporanee (temporary exhibitions) behind the villa. The villa also features a botanical garden of 5,000 sqm.
