Inaugurated in 2007, the Biblioteca San Giorgio (Library of St. George) in Pistoia has many of the characteristics of a city square.
The contemporary structure, previously an industrial hanger, has three vaulted naves that cover a surface area of approximately 5,000 sqm. The areas open to the public are arranged on two floors lit by large windows that make the greatest possible use of natural light.
Side rooms open onto the central gallery, the main element in the space. All the additional areas, such as the informal seating arrangements, the winter garden and the coffee shop are designed for a versatile, flexible and open use.
