The Fantiscritti Quarry Museum in Carrara is an open-air museum created by Walter Danesi with the aim of illustrating the life of quarrymen through the centuries. Its name derives from a Roman bas-relief of three divinities (fanti) above a Latin inscription (scritti) carved into the rock face.
There are two routes inside the museum: the outdoor route which leads to the highest point where marble is mined, at 1,000m above sea level, and the underground route. Crossing the quarry provides the opportunity to learn about key techniques and the historical and social dynamics behind the work of the quarrymen.
A workshop conserves several sculptures by Boutros Romein: life-sized workers, a couple of cattle and the tools used in the daily life of the quarry.
