One of the most striking and picturesque monuments in Verona’s historic centre is the Gothic funeral complex of the Scaligers, built to contain the tombs of the members of the illustrious family.
Sarcophagi are positioned on the ground and on ledges behind splendid, richly decorated fences of wrought iron bearing the Scaligeri’s heraldic ladder alongside the marble tombs with baldachins belonging to Cangrande I, Mastino II and Cansignorio. A number of artists worked on the decorative elements in the 1300s.
