Corso Porta Borsari in Verona’s city centre follows the layout of the ancient Roman thoroughfare, the decumanus, that linked the forum (present-day piazza Erbe) with porta Borsari. The medieval term Borsàri (bursàrii) signified the people who managed the taxes on the merchandise transiting through the gate.
On the corso, a large Romanesque door, bearing the Scaliger crest on the lock, leads to the courtyard of the "Sgarzarie", the ancient wool and clothing market and location of the loggia built by Alberto I della Scala in 1299. Number 32 marks a complex of buildings known as "stal de le vècie", a structure of 12th century origins remodelled many times and restored in the mid-1980s.
