The Scaliger bridge (also known as Castelvecchio bridge), built from terracotta brick and local white stone to cross the Adige river in Verona, is a superb example of 14th century military engineering. Just over a hundred meters long, it was commissioned by Cangrande II della Scala in approx. 1355 from the Veronese architect Guglielmo Bevilacqua.
The structure originates with the tower of the Mastio, at the centre of the medieval Castelvecchio complex, and extends over three sloping arches, with fortifications and battlements.
