The Roman Theatre of Verona, one of the largest Roman-age entertainment arenas in Italy, is set in an atmospheric natural landscape between the hill of San Pietro and the river Adige. Built in early 1st century, it was buried for many centuries beneath the buildings that gradually accumulated over its ruins.
Today, the remains of the theatre include the stage, orchestra area, cavea, two orders of galleries and three terraces at the height of the hill summit. Every year, the theatre hosts a prestigious Shakespeare Festival.
The archaeological area of the Roman Theatre comprises the buildings and cloister of the 14th century Jesuit Convent which houses the archaeological museum. The display includes interesting artefacts from Roman Verona. There is a magnificent view of the Roman Theatre and the city of Verona from the museum terrace.
