Bagno Lanterna (known locally as el pedocin) was founded in the early 20th century on the Lanterna pier, a stone's throw from the centre of Trieste, and is, still today, an obligatory destination for those who want to experience the authentic Trieste experience. The beach of the seaside resort establishment still features a wall to separate the areas reserved for women and men. The authorities have suggested tearing down the wall several times, but each time there has been some sort of popular uprising.
