Piazza della Borsa is one of the main squares in Trieste. Known as the 'second salon of the good citizen’, the square was the economic heart of the city throughout the 1900s. In earlier times, the area stood just outside the city centre, near the “Vienna gate” and the line of ancient city walls.
Initially named piazza della Dogana, the present name derives from the Greek-style building built in 1806 by architect Antonio Mollari to house the activities of the stock market. Palazzo della Borsa, which characterises the square, is one of the most significant examples of neoclassical monuments in Trieste and today is the headquarters of the Chamber of Commerce (Camera di commercio, industria, artigianato e agricoltura) of Trieste.
Numerous buildings line the square, many of them today shops or banks, including Casa Bartoli, a liberty style building by architect Max Fabiani and the covered arcade of Palazzo del Tergesteo.
At the centre of the square is the 1750 fountain of Neptune, the local public laundry trough until 1887, and the column of Emperor Leopoldo I of Austria, erected in 1660 to celebrate his visit to the city.
