Just steps from the border with Slovenia, lake Predil (or Raibl), in the municipality of Tarvisio (Udine), is located in an ancient glacial basin and is the second largest natural lake in the region.
Nestled at the foot of the slender peaks of the Julian Alps, the basin is fed by the many streams that descend from the surrounding mountains whose purity gives the water an intense green-blue hue.
During the long winter, an ideal time to witness the extraordinary stasis of nature, the clear, cold water turns to ice while, in the summer, the lake is used for swimming with numerous places for sunbathing in the Alpine sun, some near the islet mentioned in the "legend of the lake". A walking route around the lake offers a full experience of the natural beauty of the Julian Alps and includes elements of local history, such as the Aibl fort which provides a tangible glimpse into the past.
