The building that houses the Engineering Department of the University of Trento in the hamlet of Mesiano was built in 1984. The complex was formerly a sanatorium built in the 1920s and substantial parts of it are unchanged since then. These include the layout, an octagonal body covered by a dome which produces two facing "T"s, and the main facade, with three imposing round arches, which recalls the old building. There is an interesting contrast between the external covering in white Verdello di Rubbio and the red, green and blue walls inside.
The property is immersed in a park of centuries-old plants and comprises a main building (13,000 m2), a small building called the "pink house" (600 m2), a new structure which houses the "heavy laboratories" (4,500 m2) and complementary structures such as a library, a canteen and a 220-space garage. The main building has 2,300 workstations including teaching, IT and technical classrooms and technological laboratories.
