The 13th century Bishop’s Palace of Bressanone or Hofburg, was first the residence for the prince bishops and later, when they lost temporal power, for the bishops of the diocese of Bressanone from 1803 to 1973.
Overall, the structure has the appearance of a fortification, with four wings built up over three floors on a closed plan, two towers on the southern side, all surrounded by a moat with water on the eastern and southern ends. The palace which still conserves the noble apartments with precious furnishings, frescoed ceilings, stuccowork and valuable stoves is today the Diocesan Museum and Archive.
The most characteristic element is the inner courtyard overlooked by the marble portal with ancient door and the small bell tower of the palace’s church. The residential courtyard has three storey Renaissance loggias down two sides, while the remaining sides mirror each other with closed Baroque facades. The architecture and layout of the courtyard is extremely harmonious with vegetation balanced with cross walkways and a central fountain.
