Val Trebbia was formed by the river Trebbia which springs from the slopes of Mount Prelà and flows along the borders of Liguria and Padua, reaching the Po valley after crossing the territory of Piacenza and finally discharges into the river Po 110km later. The Trebbia river curves in deep gorges, creating small bays alternating with numerous small lakes, which give the surrounding landscape a wild untamed look. The upper Val Trebbia features grazing land and, as the altitude gets lower, woods of oak, hornbeams, chestnut, maple, beech and larch.
In the valley rises the medieval borgo of Bobbio whose numerous civic and religious buildings include the hunchback bridge, the Cathedral of San Colombano, the Abbey, the Basilica della Beata Vergine dell’Aiuto and Castle Malaspina.
The number of castles in the Val Trebbia still standing today demonstrates the strategic importance of the area in history: these include the forementioned Castle Malaspina, the Castle of Calendasco and the Castle of Rivalta.
