Val Tidone is a valley between the provinces of Pavia and Piacenza that takes its name from the river that created it. The Tidone river springs from mount Penice (1,460m), the highest peak in the valley, which dominates the surrounding hills scattered with vineyards, towers and numerous castles including the Castle of Agazzano, the Castle of Rivalta and the Castle of Zavattarello.
In a dominant position in Val Tidone is Rocca d’Olgisio, the oldest fortress in the Piacenza area. On the Tidone river is the strada dei mulini, dotted with fifty-odd mills, some dating to 1000 C.E., demonstrating the tradition of the millers and their work. Not far from its source the Molato dam is a work of civil engineering dating to 1928 which, almost enveloped by nature, still today irrigates fields and produces electricity. On the slopes of mount Pietra di Corvo (950m) a botanical garden features the rare Fritillaria tenella and plants from all over the world.
