The Tremiti Islands (or Diomedèe, from the Greek)form an archipelago in the Adriatic Sea, 22km north of the Gargano Promontory and 45km east of of Termoli (on the coast of Molise).
Administratively, the archipelago makes up the extended municipality of the Tremiti Islands, with 455 inhabitants, and is part of the province of Foggia in Apulia. The administrative centre is San Nicola, located on the island of that name. The municipality is part of the Gargano National Park and, since 1989, a portion of it has made up the Tremiti Islands Marine Nature Reserve.
Despite being the smallest and second least populous municipality in Apulia (only Celle di San Vito has fewer inhabitants), the Tremiti Islands are one of the most important tourist hubs in the entire region and have been awarded the prestigious Blue Flag by the Foundation for Environmental Education on several occasions for their pristine surroundings.
