The Foresta Umbra Nature Reserve is a protected area located in the Gargano National Park. It stretches across the central-eastern area of the Gargano, approximately 800m above sea level. The name ‘Umbra’ comes from the Latin for dark and shady, which characterised the Forest at that time as it does, to some extent, still today. The reserve covers a total surface area of approximately 400 hectares.
Botanically, the Forest can be divided into three areas: the upper beech grove (approximately 84% beech trees, plus maple trees, hornbeams, and others), the middle turkey oak wood (45% turkey oaks and oaks, plus 21% beech trees, then hornbeams, maples and lindens trees, etc.), and the low Mediterranean wood with holly oaks and other minor species. Reforestation in recent decades has planted black pines, chestnut trees, spruces, maple trees, and ash trees.
