Building on the former prison complex, “Le Nuove”, began in 1857 as an avant-garde structure that was intended to be a total isolation prison where each prisoner had their own cell. The prison held political dissidents and protestors under Fascist rule and was used for torture, deportations and death sentences by the Nazis during the Occupation in WWII.
Later architectural interventions included the expansion of the windows and addition of more floors, until the prison was gradually abandoned in the 1980s replaced by the new Vallette building. Today it houses judicial offices, a museum and temporary exhibition space. The air-raid bunker, discovered in 2010, can be visited.
