Set in a prison which runs to the rules of its director, Bruno Testori (Luca Zingaretti), the Il Re (The King) series focusses on the murder investigations taking place there and the assumption that there is a terrorist among the prisoners. The prison scenes were shot in two former penitentiary institutes, Le Nuove Prison in Turin, today a museum, and the former prison of Civitavecchia. In the interior prison scenes, the 19th century structure of Le Nuove is clear to see, with the first “rotonda”, a polygonal atrium lined with cells and at its centre, a spiral staircase leading downwards.
The lighthouse, known as the lantern, on the Eastern tip of Trieste, which marks the entrance to the old harbour near Molo Fratelli Bandiera, can be seen in all the exterior shots of the prison. A true frontier town, the capital city of Venezia Friuli Giulia is well equipped to represent the surroundings for a border prison: in addition to the old harbour, the characters are seen in Melara, piazza Oberdan, the Ponterosso canal, caffè San Marco which becomes a key location in the story, and Muggia Vecchia, near the medieval Basilica where a funeral is held.
